Can I use a debugger to evaluate flash memory used in CPU rewrite mode?

Latest Updated:03/01/2005

Question:

(Flash Memory)   Can I use a debugger to evaluate flash memory reprogramming control software used in CPU rewrite mode? [2005/03/01]

Answer:

Emulators cannot be used to evaluate flash memory reprogramming in CPU rewrite mode. Use an MCU with on-chip flash memory (Flash version) to execute and confirm flash memory reprogramming control software (= rewrite program).

  1. Confirm correct operation of the rewrite program on the emulator.
Then set the debug value in the flash memory control register.
  2. Program the confirmed rewrite program to the Flash MCU with a programmer, mount the MCU on the evaluation board, and execute the rewrite program.
  3. After the rewrite program has completed, read out and confirm the contents using the programmer.

The status of the reprogramming cannot be seen externally. External outputs (LED output, etc.) may be inserted at key program points to enable external confirmation of program execution. (#104886)
